Summary
Berlin became the centre of ideological conflict throughout the Cold War, as a result of events and decisions in the city which had widespread implications for many aspects of the war, and it served as a popular and physical symbol of the division, conflict and tension of the Western Allies and the Soviets throughout the war. The division of Germany among the victorious Allies, the Berlin Blockade and Airlift, the Berlin Crisis, and the subsequent construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, Ostpolitik and the eventual collapse of the wall in 1989, all had a significant impact on the wider context of the Cold War in direct and complex ways.
